Xpedition Doc Fund

About The Fund

Our team is tired of seeing great stories get left behind or unfinished due to lack of funding and support. Our aim is to partner, support, and invest in filmmakers in the areas of production, post-production, sales, and distribution.

That’s why in 2022, the Xpedition Doc Fund supported two filmmakers: Oscar-nominated director Sami Khan’s short “Angel Dose,” which chronicles Muslim-American nurse Tarik Khan’s earnest attempts to vaccinate his city during the COVID-19 pandemic and award-winning director Timothy Harris’ feature “Kenyatta: Do Not Wait Your Turn,” about the first openly gay person of color to run for United States Senate.

The Xpedition Doc Fund provides finishing funds of up to $100,000 per project. These funds could include editing resources, promotion, and/or distribution strategy for documentary filmmakers who have a compelling story to tell, have secured access to their story, and need a hand getting their film completed.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older

  • Open to documentary projects of any formats (i.e. feature length, shorts)

  • Applicants must own the copyright of their production, all required releases, and have artistic, budgetary and editorial control over their project

  • If accepted, applicants must be willing to sign an option/co-production agreement

How much funding am I able to apply for?

Xpedition is allocating up to $100,000 per project for selected films. This could include in-kind services such as editorial, legal, and promotional help, etc. Please submit the full scope of your budget. Please note that the Doc Fund will not cover any back pay of above or below the line crew that have worked on your film, only present and future investments.

When can I expect to hear back?

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis in the order of submissions received. Our notification date for the short list of applications will be July 14, 2023

Can I submit for more than one project?

Yes, please complete separate applications for each film you’d like to submit.

Can I submit my project if I am still in development/production?

Yes, but priority might be given to projects that have had a bulk of their filming completed. The Doc Fund focuses mainly on providing finishing funds to films that are nearing completion.

Is this considered a grant?

No, Xpedition seeks to partner with filmmakers not just in terms of financial help, but also with producing the film as needed. Xpedition would come on as a producing partner and a deal will be made accordingly.
